Parshas Lech Licha: What Happened To All Of Avrohom's Geirim?

"VaYikach Avraham ... ViEs Kol HaNefesh Asher Asu Bi Charan; Avraham took all the souls that he made in Charan to the Land of Canaan." Rashi explans that Avraham converted the men, and Sarah converted the women. All these Geirim were brought to Eretz Yisrael.

Pirkei Drabbi Elazar asks, "What happened to the descendents of these Geirim? Have you ever heard of someone saying that he is a descendent of Avraham's Geirim?"  He answers that when Avraham died these Geirim went "off the derech" and back to their old ways. Pardas Yosef explains that this was because they did not respect Yitzchok as much as Avraham and, therefore ,"cooled off" in their Yiddishkeit.

i think u should quote the full text of the pardes yosef and add that since they were not inspired by yitzchak like they were by avrohom they refused to come under his wing hence they gradually sliped away from here says the pardes yosef we see that we should not say that our leader of the generation isnt like the previous one and therefore we cant relate to them otherwise we will eventually just drift away

this type of vort always troubled me. the Rabeinu Bchai in Toldos on the Passuk
"וישב יצחק ויחפור את בארות המים אשר חפרו בימי אברהם אביו" (כ"ו, י"ח).
says that although they left when avraham died Yitzchok brought them back

רבינו בחיי4 ביאר שהבארות שחפר אברהם מבטאים את הגרים שגייר בזמנו, שאותם גרים חזרו לסורם ויצחק החזירם ליהדות על ידי הכרייה מחדש של הבארות.
In fact the Medresh Rabbah in Vayeishev #4 says clearly that all the avos including yitzchok were Megayer Geirim

in any event to say that due to the Middah of Yitzchok he was unable to be Mekarev others seems to me to be incorrect.

HaRav Shmuel Kamenetsky Shlitah, Rosh Yeshivah of the yeshivah of Philadelphia, said pshat in what happened to Avraham Avinu's Geirim as follows:

The nature of a person is to be moser nefesh for his children. As we have seen, so many immigrants would take menial jobs, scrubbing floors, cleaning apartments, working long, arduous hours to make a better life for their children. Working hard so their children could better themselves financially in better jobs. Become doctors, lawyers, etc. A person is prepared to make sacrifices for his child, so his child shouldn't have to sacrifice.

The people Avraham Avinu and Surah Imeinu were megayer were prepared to be moser nefesh for Torah. But they could not give over that trait of being moser nefesh for Torah to their children. It is not the nature of a parent to want his child to have to sacrifice. Hence there was no continuity to the next generations of staying within the world of Torah. The next generation were not prepared to be moser nefesh, as their parents had been.

However, HaShem saw that with Avraham Avinu it was different. In Parshas Vayeira, Perek Yud Ches, Posuk Yud Tes, HaShem says "Ki Yedativ L'Maan Asher Yettzaveh Es Bonuv V'Es Baiso Acharav V'Shumru Derech HaShem Laasos Tzadaka Umishpat...

HaShem saw that not only is Avarham Avinu being moser nefesh for Torah, but he is is also educating his children to be moser nefesh for Torah - which is against the nature of a parent. It is in this zchus that HaShem continues and say "...L'Maan Huvi HaShem Al Avraham Eis Asher Diber Aluv".

The havtochas from HaShem came because HaShem recognized that through the mesros nefesh of Avraham Avinu, Klall Ysiroel will learn and make this midah a central part of their lives.

With reference to the last comment, it is important to mention the 'yessoid'which Hagaon Rav Moshe Feinstein Zt'l mentioned numerous times -
If a parent gives the impression that "es is shver tzu zein a Yid" by showing what great sacrifices must be made (-even if he readily undertakes these sacrifices himself-) he cannot expect his children to undergo the same mesirus nefesh. It is essential to display genuine joy in our Avodas Haborei to the extent that any 'costs' or 'sacrifice' involved is greatly outweighed by the 'Glik' tzu zein a Eved Hashem!!
RS, Gateshead, 2011-11-02 12:56:46
I heard this week that Rav Leib Gurwicz Ztl said that the upright, honest 'chasidei umois ho'iolom found throughout the generations are gilgulim of the nefesh asher ossu bechoron.
The lesson here is that it is wrong to assume that all Avrohom's input turned out to be a waste - Every hishtadlus for good purposes bears fruit!
