A Beautiful Sun On A Bleak Day
Did you ever go to a Bais HaKevoros to say good bye and bury someone on beautiful day?  Whether it was a young child whose life and potential were snuffed out, or an old uncle whom the world will quickly forget, did you wonder how the sun has the audacity to go on shining without showing the slightest respect or remorse.  Our imagination of a dreadful roll call, as our parents and grandparents stood half naked in Auschwitz before merciless killers, are probably of dreary overcast days.  But believe it or not there were some splendidly gorgeous days in this Hell on earth.  What was the sun smiling about?  Why doesn't nature scream out at injustice and cruelty?  Why doesn't the earth shake, the mountains rumble, the clouds threaten, and the lightning strike?

The Rambam says that all the heavenly bodies are Baalei Nefesh, Dei'a V'Haskel and they all recognize their creator to whom they sing praise.  Rashi in Nitzavim (30:19) says that Hashem tells us to look at the sky that He created for us.  Look at the sun and the earth as they follow my command and do their job without wavering even slightly from my word, even though they will receive no reward or punishment.  Bnei Yisroel is the one who changes but cannot drag the sun down with them.  The sun follows it command and does not act on its own emotion, or out of compassion or revenge.  Hashem's will is its only course of nature without a second thought.  In the darkest of times as we look up and see glowing sun we need to look at ourselves and ask, is the sun crazy or is it us?  Which one of us have veered from the sane path, and who is doing Hashem's' will?

We should however take comfort in knowing that the sun is in no way a reflection of the feelings of Hashem.  When His children suffer, Hashem does not smile.  The world does not go on.  Indeed the whole universe changes because of a few people down here on planet earth.  "Vayikra Hashem Elokim Tzivakos BaYom Hahu L'Bchi ULiMispeid ULiKarcha VLachgor Sak."  But we can't see it.  "V'Anochi Haster Astir Panai" Vayeilech (31:18)  We are blinded by the sun as Hashem hides his face from us.  He suffers our pain and He suffers His own silence, more than us.  The sun is merely his mask, hiding the extent of His pain.

So next time you see a beautiful sun on a bitter day, look up and know beyond the warm glow is a crying Father, waiting for his children to return so that He can come out of hiding.  May we be zocheh this year to see the real light, the light shining from above, the light that is Shivasayim K'Or HaBoker, the light that is true happiness, the light of the Geula, the light of Moshiach, and the light of Giluy Shechina.

Was this intentionally sent out shortly before Elul 23 and 9/11?

One of the things that struck me at the time was how beautiful the day had started...
