|Is A Bathing Suit Muktza?|
|How can an innocuous article of clothing be muktza? The answer is that muktza means any item that when Shabbos starts you will not use. Under this general heading of things you will not use are items whose purpose is solely for things that are forbidden on Shabbos, Muktza Machmas Issur. So the question of a bathing suit is what is its purpose and is it permissible.|
The Orchos Shabbos (19:80:103) points out that swimming in an ocean or river is assur on Shabbos from a Gezeiras Chachomim. However Chazal did not forbid swimming in a pool. Yet it has become an accepted minhag not to immerse ourselves in water even if it is cold water so we do not go swimming.
The question is does a bathing suit take on the din of Muktza Machmas Issur based on a minhag? The Orchos Shabbos (19:64:93) brings from the Pri Megadim (OC AA 337:5) that a minhag not to use a certain kli does not make it Muktza and therefore a bathing suit is considered Kli SheMilachto L'Heter, an article designated for permissible uses and is not Muktza.
