Shevet HaKehosi: Can Older Children Eat Before Kiddush?

What do you do with a child that is above the age of chinuch for Kiddush but is too hungry to wait for their father to come home from Shul to make Kiddush? The Shevet HaKehosi (2:345) says that although he must make Kiddush it is permissible to give him food to eat before kiddush. This is based on the Magen Avrohom (269:1) who distinguishes between feeding a child food that is assur, which is not permissible, and feeding a child something permissible during a time that it is forbidden to eat, which is permissible.
