Rav Shloime Berman Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh: Groomed By The Ponevezher Rav and the Chazon Ish

He was affectionately known as Rav Shloimke by his many talmidim and admirers both talmidim of Yeshivas Ponevezh where he served as Rosh Yeshiva alongside with Rav Shach and Rav Dovid Povarsky, as well as the many Baalei Batim that were close with him and drank from his Torah.

He was born in Russia in 5690/1930 and moved to Eretz Yisroel at the young age of 4. His father was one of the leading Rabbonim in Tel Aviv and had a close relationship with Rav Eliyahu Dessler whom he learned with B'Chavrusa. At the age of 14 he gained admission to Yeshivas Ponevezh where he remained his whole life. Quickly he rose to become the top bochur in the Yeshiva where he became inseparable from his Rebbi the Ponevezher Rav.

When the Chazon Ish needed a Bochur to stay with him in his home he turned to the Ponevezher Rav to send a suitable bochur from the Yeshiva and the Ponevezher Rav send Rav Shloime. Rav Shloime lived in the home of the Chazon Ish for six years. When the Steipler Gaon was looking for a Shidduch for his daughter the Chazon Ish suggested Rav Shloime. They were married in 1952. After two years in the Ponevezher Kollel he was appointed Rosh Yeshiva by the Ponevezher Rav. While serving in Ponevezh he had a very close relationship with Rav Shach who would frequently consult with him valuing his opinion on many matters.

Aside from his brilliant mind and incredible hasmada, Rav Shloime was known as an "Ish Chesed". His love for his fellow Yid knew no bounds. While he was Rosh Yeshiva of one of the most prestigious Yeshivos with the best young minds in the world, he nevertheless dedicated a great deal of his time giving shiurim to simple Baalei Batim and traveled out of Bnei Brak for the privilege.

The effects of Parkinson's disease forced him to stop giving shiurim and he was Niftar on the seventh night of Chanukah 5765/2004. He left behind his seforim "Asher L'Shlomo". He is survived by his children including Rav Chaim Peretz Berman and his son in law Rav Eliezer Ginsburg Mashgiach Ruchni of Ponevezh.
