Shabbos, The White Light That Shines So Bright
In Parshas Emor the pasuk says "Eileh Moadei Hashem", these are the Yomim Tovim of Hashem (Emor 23:4).  But before talking about Yom Tov the Torah interrupts with Shabbos.  Rashi says this teaches us that if someone keeps all the Yomim Tovim it is as if he kept Shabbos.  The Maharal MiPrague explains that there are seven days of Yom Tov mentioned in the parsha (two Pesach, Shavuos, Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, Succos, and Shmini Atzeres).  These seven days are only a fraction of the entire Shevisa, or rest.  Combined they equal Shabbos which is on the seventh day.

What exactly the Maharal means by Shevisa, is something that you should speak to Maharal experts about.  But the general concept, which is found in many places is that while each day of Yom Tov possesses a special kedusha, Shabbos has it all wrapped in one.  While we wait a whole year for Zman Cheiruseinu of Pesach, Kabalas HaTorah on Shavuos, the glory of Hashem's coronation on Rosh HaShana, the tshuva of Yom Kippur, and the simcha of Succos, we often overlook the incredible power of Shabbos.

Why don't we feel it or appreciate it?  Why do we wait a whole year for something we can get every Shabbos.  Maybe we can compare this to white light.  It appears to us as colorless but in truth it is the combination of all the colors of the spectrum.  Why don't we see the beautiful colors?  Described this way we can understand.  White is the perception which is evoked by light that stimulates all three types of color sensitive cone cells in the human eye in nearly equal amount and with high brightness compared to the surroundings.

Similarly Shabbos is an overpowering dose of all the gifts that we are given during the year.  The combination simply blinds us.  Unless our perception is super sensitive, it is too powerful for us to separate the various qualities and make sense of it.

While we may not be able to taste a single individual component until it is isolated on its special day, this Shabbos at least  recognize that it is there.  Look at it like the Mun in the Midbar.  We can't taste all the flavors at once but we appreciate the fact that it is all in there, and whatever flavor we choose at the moment we can have.  Through the kindness of Hashem we have plenty of Shabbosim.  Appreciate them, treasure them, and most importantly take advantage of them like you would a Yom Tov.
