Section: Parshas HaShavua Category: Quick Vort | Parshas Mishpatim: Rebbi Akiva Eiger - The Good Doctor Is A Good Doctor | "V'Rapoh Yirapeh" (Mishpatim 21:19). Although all health and sickness come exclusively from Hashem, the Torah gives permission for Doctor to intervene medically. Yet Chazal tell us (Kedushin 82a), "Tov SheBaRofim L'Gehinom", simply translated to, "the best of the Doctors will go to Gehinom". Rashi says because they are not afraid of sickness and do not humble their hearts to Hashem. They also sometimes kill people.
Rebbi Akiva Eiger asks, if they are so terrible what is the "Tov" in them? He answers that Chazal are not speaking about doctors at all. He explains that the outstanding qualities in a doctor is that he can display great cruelty. He can cut up a human without batting an eye. He face a person and tell them they are going to die. No compassionate person can do the things a doctor can do to a person.
Chazal are telling us, says Rebbi Akiva Eiger, that while these attributes are "good" for a doctor, if an ordinary person were to act this way, woe unto him, as he will find himself deep in the pit of Gehinom.
