Shearim HaMetzuyanim BHalacha: Opening a Car Door on Shabbos
If someone forgets something in their car before Shabbos may one open the car door to retrieve this item on Shabbos? Rav Shlomo Zalman Braun in The She’arim HaMetzuyanim B’Halacha (89:4) says that the car itself is not Muktza and the engine is Batel to the car.
Therefore he paskens that it is permissible to open the door of the car (providing it does not turn on lights or cause any other Mileches Shabbos). He compares this to opening a refrigerator door, which also has a motor in it but is not Muktza.
