Maharam Alshakar - Selling the Schar of Your Mitzva?
May a person sell to his friend his reward for a Mitzvah? The Maharam Alshakar says (101) says absolutely not! A reward for a Mitzvah is not a physical item that is possible to sell. The reward for a Mitzvah is a spiritual reward that is reserved solely for the person who did the Mitzvah and can't be transferred to another person. If a person does attempt to sell a Mitzvah he is punished for treating the Mitzvah and its reward so lightly and he may very well lose the reward for the Mitzvah as a result, however the buyer does not receive the reward in his stead.

However, if someone supports a person who learns Torah or is occupied in Mitzvos certainly he is rewarded for that, however the reward that he receives is not the reward of the Mitzvah that was done as a result of his support. Rather he is rewarded separately for the Mitzvah of supporting a person who is learning which is a separate reward than the reward of learning Torah itself.

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.

There is a story of the Chofetz Chaim giving someone Schar of 5 minutes of his learning. When asked why he didn't give more, he responded that it was a great s'char. The implication being that what he gave away was part of his own Schar.

Maybe the point is the "selling". You cheapen it. im yitein ish kol hon baiso....boz yavuzu lo!

the tomer devora says that you cannot receive a gashmiyos reward for mitzvos that are ruchniyos. Giving zechusim to someone else for his gashmiyos is your ruchniyos as Rav Yisroel Salanter said, "Yenem's gashmiyos iz deine ruchniyos"

There is a sugya in Chullin 87A which talks about Schar Mitzvah on a monetary basis. Meaning how much is a mitzvah worth monetarily. The sugya there is about someone 'stealing a mitzvah' and what are the damages. But what is interesting is the Rebbi aftewards asks a Tzedukki if he wants to sell the mitzvah of Zimun! Tosafos there explains Rebbi was trying to get the mitzvah out of the Tzedukki's hands. We still see though a way to Mechavev Mitzvos on others is by selling them, meaning you sell the opportunity to get Schar for the mitzvah by allowing another one do it. To summarize, when someone steals a 'mitzvah' from someone a set price is the fine. To sell mitzvos to show Chavivus othe mitzvah is also allowed, but to sell the S'char that Hashem already awarded you is a Bizion, but as we see from the Chafetz Chaim to L'zarez someone you can give away some of your Schar, because giving away that Schar will actually make your Schar more by causing the other to do more mitzvos. But just to give it away is wrong as we see about Hillel and Shivna Sotah 21:A near the bottom.
