Section: Halacha Category: Tshuvos Cutting Nails on Erev Shabbos Chol HaMo'ed | While all agree that taking a haircut or shaving is forbidden on Chol HaMo'ed, cutting nails is a machlokes between the Michaber (OC 532:1) who holds that it is permissible and the Rema who paskens that it is Assur. Sfardim are lenient like the Michaber while Ashkenazin are Machmir in accordance with the Rema.
However since cutting nails is not assur according to everyone, the Mishna Brura paskens like the Mogen Avrohom that if one cut his nails before Yom Tov, he may cut them again on Chol HaMo'ed if necessary. This is unlike shaving which is Assur on Chol HaMo'ed even if one shaved on Erev Yom Tov.
The Be'er Heitev brings from the Nachlas Shiva that if one is Makpid to cut his nails every Erev Shabbos he may do so on Erev Shabbos Chol HaMo'ed even if he did not cut them Erev Yom Tov. The Mishna Brura does not mention this leniency. Furthermore the Shaarei Tshuva (468:1) brings the Shvus Yaakov who Assurs in this case. Yet the Shmiras Shabbos K'Hilchaso (66:33) paskens like the Be'er Heitev and

dm, ramat beit shemesh, 2013-03-31 03:53:57 i think even the M"B agrees here (even though he doesn't say it b'feirush), since he says that if your nails didn't look unkempt on erev Y"T, then you can cut them during chol hamoed, so if y"t comes out on Tuesday, so you last cut your fingernails the previous erev Shabbos, then they'll still be nice on erev Y"T, so you may be able to cut them erev Shabbos chol Hamoed Anonymous, 2013-03-31 05:33:58 DM - According to your scenario the Mishna Brura would allow because he cut them before Yom Tov and not because it is Erev Shabbos. Moreover it is a far stretch to say that cutting them four days before Yom Tov would be construed as cutting them before Yom Tov. The whole heter is if he actually cut them before Yom Tov and not if he didn't because they didn't need to be cut.
I wouldn't be so courageous to add to the Mishna Brura's Heter based on your own understanding when he doesn't say anything like that. jt, ny, 2013-09-04 12:24:19 Just wondering where the issur of shaving or cutting hair on hol hamoed even if you shaved or cut hair before yom tov comes from. I have heard differently.
UF, NY, 2013-09-30 10:39:55 There is an Issur to cut your hair on Chol Hamoed so you will get a haircut before yom Tov and you don't walk into yom Tov looking unkempt. On a deeper lever the reason we are told to get a hair cut prior to yom Tov is to remove the gevurah before yom Tov, this is why we can't do it on chol hamoed. It must be done before.(something we don't need to do for Shabbos, it happens without us doing an action) But why can't we shave on chol hamoed? If we come to chol hamoed without having shaved before yom Tov, we look like an avel. That is certainly an issur.
