Perek Shira: The Freebird - How To Achieve True Independence
Rav Yaakov Emden in Zimras Ha'aretz says that Tasis is a free bird that does not accept authority. It cannot be tamed or trained no matter what incentives in the way of food you offer it. It cherishes its independence above all.
The Lechem Rav explains that the gemara says "Ein Ben Chorin Ela Mi SheOsek BaTorah"; only a person who learns Torah is completely free. The gemara learns this from the Torah's use of the word "Charus" "carved" which is similar to "Cheirus" "free" when describing the Luchos. The Lechem Rav says the gemara knows this from "mem sofis" and ‘samech" that are completely enclosed and since the luchos were carved through the entire thickness of tablet the fact that the inside of the carving did not fall our was a Nes since it is surrounded by air on all sides.
Just like a bird flies in the air and is not attached to the physical ground so too a Talmid Chochom who dissociated himself from the material world is "free" from the world's limitations and is able to soar to the Heavens freely. "Ezri Me'Im Hashem Oseh Shamayim Va'Aretz"; both the bird and the faithful torah scholar sing, our help comes from Hashem and we will not sell our freedom for some meager earthy rations.
