Take The Leadership Challenge
Each nation has their "Gedolim", meaning their great leaders.  How valuable are these leaders?   Answer a few quick questions and you will see the answer for yourself.  How much training does it take to become a leader?  What are the criteria needed?  What are the barriers to entry?  How many potential successors are ready to step in?  BiKitzur, what does it take to be a leader.

Take a gadol B'Yisroel, lets says Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l for example.  When Rav Shlomo Zalman was niftar, it was an irreplaceable loss.  He had close to ninety years of mesiras nefesh for torah under his belt.  He purified himself through thousands of heartfelt tefilos.  He broke his ego, with probably millions of acts of self sacrifice to his people and his creator.  He wanted and needed nothing for himself.  He was the property of the people.  Where are you going to find a replacement for that?  It can't be done overnight if at all.  Even the greatest stars of the next generation have not built up in their 60-70 years what Rav Shlomo Zalman did in his years.

In the rest of the world when you get older, says Rav Shimshon Pincus, your value declines.  You are not as capable of achieving all the material things you were able to at a younger age.  However in Am Yisroel, age is the greatest credential you can have.  Everyday that you add more torah, more chesed, and more tefila to your resume, you are far above who you were the day before.  A day in the life of an elderly and already great Chasam Sofer was more accomplished in terms of "Aliya" than what most of can achieve in five lifetimes.

Today the world cries about the lack of great leadership, but the truth is that it is society's own undoing.  Our needs and desires, and the world's in general, has become so frivolous that the qualifications for leadership are minimal and the position is more self serving than anything else.  No wonder there are so many of the most unworthy characters applying, while the true stars stay far away.

If you want to know the worth of a society calculate the average age of its leaders.  While the average age of leaders around the world is dropping by an alarming rate, our gedolim are not getting any younger.  I always laugh when I picture the site of our leaders broadcast across worldwide media when Moshiach comes.  The world will be flabbergasted at the site of our elderly leaders sitting around a meeting table, vibrantly discussing the issues of the day, while all the youngster look on.

So when we are fortunate to bid good-bye to a few of the leaders who we attribute so much of our pain and suffering to, besides for the total lack of understanding that it all comes from Hashem, even logically there really is no cause to celebrate.  There are no shortage of greedy and bloodthirsty thirty somethings ready to take over.  And they are all more than qualified for the job at hand.
