A Very Special Hakafa
Sometimes waves of emotion grab you without warning.  We were dancing on Simchas Torah and singing one of my favorite songs, Emes, Emes Ata Hu Rishon when the Gabbai gave me a Sefer Torah to dance with.  As I clutched the Torah I began thinking of the significance of the Torah.  In this world there is no absolute truth.  Everything is somewhat tainted with doubt and untruth.  Forget about our everyday struggles making a living in a tricky world.  I am talking about raising children and raising ourselves.  Even the good deeds we do are tainted somewhat with self interest and self delusion.  That is the nature of the world.  "Ki Yetzer Lev HaAdam Ra MiNe'urav", the inclination of a person is bad from his youth.

The gemara in Shabbos (104a) says that word Sheker is comprised of three consecutive letters (Kuf, Reish, Shin) because lies are abound and easy to spot. Whereas Emes, is comprised of the first and last letter of the Aleph Bais on one in the Middle (Aleph, Mem, Tav) because truths are few and far between and very hard to come by.  You need to go to all ends of the earth to find truth.  Yet, here I was holding a physical object that represented the absolute truth.  Something from beyond this world.  An object that preceded the world by two thousand years.  The greatest miracle in creation is that a mere human made up of lies and falsehood can connect to the "Echad Yachid U'Miyuchad" through this very physical looking roll of parchment that has been around from before time began.  I held it close to my heart and sang Emes, Emes, Emes,... with great feeling.

Then as if awoken from a dream, I felt a tap on my shoulder and the gabbai asked me to please give the Sefer Torah to someone else.  I rejoined the circle and found myself holding the hand of an elderly man shuffling along singing Emes, Emes.  This was no ordinary man, nor was this an ordinary Simchas Torah for him.  This man was a Rosh Kollel who had made the trip to come from a different country to be with his son's family for Yom Tov.

We all say Modeh Ani in the morning without much appreciation.  His son a 30 something year old Kollel yungerman and Yira Shamayim with 9 children was one of the unfortunate people who over a month ago, did not wake up one morning.  Ambulances rushed to his house to find him in cardiac arrest.  Hatzola brought him back to life, but he has been lying motionless in the hospital on life support ever since.

Two minutes before I was emotionally aroused, but now my eyes were filled with tears holding hands with this tzaddik who courageously sang along "Emes, Emes", Hashem is the truth and all he does is fair.  He continued in his shaky voice with the entire tzibbur but with even more conviction, "U'Mibaladecha Ein Lanu Melech Go'el U'Moshia", aside from you Hashem we have no other King who can redeem us and save us.  This was a Hakafa I will not soon forget.

We wish a speedy Refuah Sheleima to Refoel Yehuda Tzvi ben Breinala, in whose zechus this article was written.
