Go My Son
At the Levaya of the Gateshead Rov zt”l the Gaavad of the Eidah HaChareidis, Rav Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss Shlit”a was maspid him as follows.   Dovid HaMelech in Tehilim says, “Lichu Vanim Shim’u Li Yiras Hashem Alamedchem”, go my sons and listen to me, I will teach you fear of Hashem.  If Dovid wanted to teach his children Yiras Hashem why is he sending them away?  Shouldn’t he say, “come” my sons instead of “go” my sons?

The Ga’avad answered (I don’t remember if he said this in someone else’s name or not) that sometimes the lessons don’t sink in until the children leave home.  When a child is raised in home where midos and Yiras Shamayim are so natural, he sometimes can lose sight of how precious these traits are.  Without seeing the dark side of things it is hard to appreciate how fortunate he is.  The lessons may not be fully absorbed and may not make a great impression on the child.

When the child enters the “real world” and sees reality for himself, he now has a yardstick to measure the greatness of his old environment. Only now in the darkness, does he realize what incredibly intense light he was living in and he finally comes to value it.  Only now does his father’s ways become a lifeboat in a stormy sea.  Only now does he resolve to hold on to it with all his might.

“Lichu Vanim Shim’u Li Yiras Hashem Alamedchem”, the Gateshead Rov’s house was so fully steeped in Yiras Shamayim that during the lifetime of the Gateshead Rov it was impossible for his children and his Kehilla to fully grasp the greatness that he taught.  Only in retrospect now that the world is a without the light of this great Tzadik can we fully grasp the meaning of the things he said and the lessons he taught.

While the Ga’avad said this as the greatest of praise about the Gateshead Rov who was on such a high level, in it lies a lesson us lesser people.  We can explain this lesson with a Mashal.  A person is gives someone a stone to deliver the next day.  He stuffs it in his pocket half hazard and heads home.  Upon reaching home he empties his pockets onto his kitchen table and walks away.  A friend of his who works in diamonds happened to come to his house that evening and seeing the stone on the table he takes a look a it.  To his amazement this is rare stone worth a small fortune. Nervously he grabs the stone away to hide it for safekeeping.

A person will only guard things to the degree to which he values it and thinks it is truly special.  No matter how special it is if you don’t understand the value you will not give it much consideration.  We must teach our children not only to keep the Torah but also the beauty of the Torah way.  This will insure that they have incentive to hold on to it and to cherish it far beyond the borders of their childhood home.
