Halacha - changing diapers on shabbos
Submitted by anonymous  Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh
Question:
Answer:

There is a big machlokes in the Poskim regarding the use of baby wipes on Shabbos; my personal opinion is that they should not be used, but each person should follow their own Rav. The issue is that when wiping the baby you want to squeeze out some of the solution absorbed in the wipe to aid is dissolving and removing the dirt. This is similar to squeezing juice from an orange or milking a cow which are assur mi'deoraisa because of mefarek/dash. The lenient opinions rely on a combination of factors, none of which in my opinion are sufficient when the issue is potentially an issur mi'deoraisa.

I recommend using a spray bottle to moisten the relevant area and to wipe clean with a paper towel.

The question was how do you change, not how do you NOT change diapers. I could give you a graphic description of the choices and why none seems as good as using wipes without squeezing them....

An excellent point. When squeezing fruit we do say that only olives and grapes are mideoraisa. However the Rosh Shabbos 22:4 explains that this is specific to fruit which is primarily a solid food that dash is limited to things that are regularly pressed for their juice, however when wringing a cloth for its absorbed liquid it is assur mideoraisa in any event.

If you could clarify this answer. I was under the impression that dosh/schitah with anything other than grapes/olives is not de'oriasa. The reason to assur would not be because of dosh deorisa, otherwise all would agree it's asur. Thanks
