Miscellaneous - wedding vows
Submitted by anonymous  Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh
Question: HI. If two young people, a man and a woman, privately say the "Harey At" blessings, the man gives the young woman a ring, and then they consummated the marriage ...are they legally married? They never married according to US law, or even told anyone that they had made promises to one another.

What they did was certainly inappropriate and according to most Poskim is included in the issur d'Oraisa of "lo sihye kedaisha" which includes pre-marital sex. However, without any witnesses there is no possibility of marriage and they do not need a Get to split up.
