|Halacha - 9 days and a new clothing gift|
|Submitted by anonymous Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh|
|Question: I was invited for Shabbat dinner at someone's house, and I have a scarf that I want to give to the lady of the house (that I bought before the 3 weeks). Is it okay to give them a new article of clothing during the 9 days?
|Answer: No. One may not give an article of clothing as a gift during the 9 days just like one may not buy it.

I good point, I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear enough. On Tisha b'Av the problem is with giving the present, as you pointed out, and would not apply during the rest of the 9 days but would apply to insignificant object that may be bought during the 9 days. However I was referring to an issue receiving a significant gift such as an article of clothing where there is no difference purchasing clothing or receiving it as a gift, both are not done during the entire 9 days.

The Mishna B'rura brings from the Magen Avrohom that it's Assur to give a present on Tisha B'av because its like She'alas Shalom. Isn't this mashma that during the nine days it would be permissable to give a gift?
