Halacha - Halachas of mourning a parent
Submitted by anonymous  Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh
Question: My friend's birthday is on Monday.I wanted to know if halachically I can give my friend whose father was niftar this year (10 months ago) a birthday card (would it be any different if it was a group card?). Also, can I take her out for dinner for her birthday? Can 3 other friends come as well? Thank you so much.
Answer:

I'm sorry but one may not send a greeting card or present to someone who is within the year after the passing of a parent. Additionally, they would not participate in a social gathering such as a birthday party. However you certainly should let your friend know that you are thinking of them and did not forget about their momentous occasion.
