Miscellaneous - Even Tkuma
Submitted by Bryan  Answered by Rabbi Tzvi Frank
Question:
Answer: The early source for this stone is in the Talmud. see: Shabbat 66a and Rif, Shabbat 30b.  Also the gemara discusses the permissibility of a woman carrying this stone outside on Shabbos even if there is no eruv.  It does not discuss how it actually works.

It is not readily apparent if the stone's protective properties are of spiritual or physical nature.  The gemara there discusses that if you weigh a stone against the even tkuma and find the weight to be equivalent, then the stone takes on the protective properties as well.  It would appear then that the "power" is of a metaphysical nature.

Hope this helps..
