Hashkafa - To shave or not to shave
Submitted by Chaim  Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh
Question: I'm an Air Force cadet, and shaving is required according to uniform regulations. I was told by a (perfectly Frum) Chaplain that I'm allowed to shave during Chol Hamoed and Sefira, like any other job with that Heter, but I was also told by my commander that I don't have to, but I can't wear my uniform if I don't. While I can do this, it will elicit many raised eyebrows and questions. Is this Inyun of aveilus strong enough that I should ask to be accommodated (at least while I'm still a cadet and not active duty)? Or is it better to show them that I'll only ask for accommodation when I need to, and follow the rules when I can, thus making them more likely to listen when I ask for something serious, i.e. Shabbos, because they'll know I don't ask unless I can't compromise?
Answer:

It seems to me that you may shave. Even thought they may accommodate you this time, but it is likely to have repercussions down the road and label you "uncooperative". Since it seems you already mentioned the issue to your commander, you might want to tell him that you are not compromising on you religious principles, you are following them according to the ruling of your Rabbi and chaplain.
