Halacha - forgot it was a fast day
Submitted by Elisha  Answered by Rav Peretz Moncharsh
Question: I forgot today is a fast day and have been eating all day (but that certainly would explain the stares I got at the pizza store!). My brother told me he thinks I have to make up the fast on another day...is there any halacha to that affect?
Answer:

First of all you must stop eating immediately. While Halacha does not require you to fast a different day as a "make up" for the fast you missed, the Magen Avraham brings a Mahril who recommends fasting a different day as a form of teshuva for forgetting. Since today most people are not strong enough to take on extra fast days, one should preferably give tzedaka instead. The recommended amount would be equal to the cost of one day's meals.
