Parshas Vayigash: Meshech Chochma - Yaakov's Night Vision On The Way Out
Right before Yaakov goes down to Mitzrayim, Hashem appears to Yaakov in a dream, "Vayomer Elokim L'Yisroel B'Maros HaLaila" (Vayigash 46:2)  Hashem spoke to all the Avos, yet only by Yaakov do we find Hashem coming to him in a vision at night.  The Meshech Chochma says that we find another time that Hashem spoke to Yaakov at night.  That was when he was running away from Eisav on the way to Lavan's house.  Why does Hashem appear to Yaakov at night?

The Meshech Chochma answers that these two occurrences have something in common.  Both times Yaakov was leaving Eretz Yisroel on the way to Chutz LaAretz and a difficult Galus ahead of him.  Galus is compared to night.  At night it is dark and we cannot see things clearly, which makes the seemingly harsh events unfolding around us difficult to decipher and we are at a loss to explain why we are in such a bad predicament.

The symbolism of Hashem appearing to Yaakov at night is Hashem telling Klal Yisroel, you are going into the darkness.  However just because you cannot see me it doesn't mean I am not there.  Even in darkness of the night I am with you and I am calling you.  In the Galus we cannot see so we must listen carefully to feel Hashem's presence which never leaves us.
