Rav Binyomin Zilber Zt"l: Wearing Glasses On Shabbos
The world lost a great light when Rav Binyomin Yehoshua Zilber, Zecher Tzaddik V'kadosh L'vracha, was niftar last night in Bnei Brak.  Rav Zilber was a member of the Mo'etzes Gedolei HaTorah and the michaber of many seforim in both mussar and halacha.  He was most famous for his Shailos U'Tshuvos Uz Nidbiru.  Rav Zilber was 91 years old.

In one of his tshuvos, Rav Zilber was asked (Az Nidbiru 6:28), if it is permissible to wear glasses in Reshus HaRabimon Shabbos or it is Assur because you may take it off and carry them, especially in the rain.  He was also asked about wearing reading glasses if the two temples are tied with a string.

He answered that the Tshuvas HaGershuni writes that there is no problem with wearing glasses, and we are not Choshesh that he will remove them.  As far as the rain is concerned, he says, that he never saw someone take there glasses off in the rain.

With regard to reading glasses, he says it is assur to wear in the street even if they are tied in a way that you will not remove them.  The reason is because reading glasses are meant for the person's benefit like watch and not to adorn his Guf.  The fact that you append it to your body does not permit you to carry it.  Only adornments of the Guf such as jewelry, are not considered carrying if worn.
