Bedikas Chometz Done Right!
Bedikas Chometz is a very serious matter.  Although our houses are cleaned well before the night of the Bedika, you should perform a thorough search in order to do this important mitzva properly.

The Seder HaYom writes that a person should make the Bedika as if no cleaning has been done beforehand.  You should not rely on all the preparation and work that has been done to clean the house and you should carefully check every nook and cranny.  The Vilna Gaon would spend hours doing bedika himself despite the fact that it took time from his precious learning and he could have asked his family to help.

The Bnei Yisaschar in Derech Pikudecha (Mitzva 9) writes that if your bedika simply consists of looking for the 10 pieces that were hidden it is entirely possible that your bracha was L’vatala.

The Michtav Sofer (17) writes that his father the Chasam Sofer would put on his hat and jacket for Bedikas Chometz.  The Mogen Avrohom (432) writes that you should wash your hands in preparation of the mitzva.  (Pischei Tshuvos 431:1)

Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. One should consult a Rav before drawing any conclusions.
